In one week, I heard references to Deputies in The States of Guernsey being referred to put their “big boy pants on” to make a decision. As only 8 women sit in the 38 seats of Deputies, I wanted to explore the impact of these comments, are they being made because the government in Guernsey is predominately male and so these comments are accepted and normalised? Does it impact how women feel in politics? Does it encourage women to stand in politics if they hear these comments? I produced the programme and organised a local parish politician to discuss her thoughts, with a language expert on the impact this language has on development, sexism and society. Nick De Garis presented the programme.
